Moving Without All The Hassle

Every actor dreams of getting a call and finding out they won a role. However, sometimes there is very little planning possible once you find out. If your agent just let you know that the actor set to play a major recurring role has backed out, and you've been picked by the producers, you might only have a week to jump on an airplane and head out of town. If it was only a commercial, or a few days' role on a movie, then it's not a problem. But a recurring role on a major production might have you in Australia, Bulgaria, or Ireland for months. So, you need to figure out some things, and fast.
Find An Apartment
The most important things to figure out is how to deal with your living situation. If you're living in a place with one or two roommates, you can't leave them in a lurch. It's unreasonable to leave your stuff there and expect not to pay your share for several months. Do this, and you're likely to find everything gone when you fly back. But you can't reasonably be expected to pay the rent while you're not living there for perhaps six or more months. So, you need to be proactive and find someone to sublet it as soon as possible. You can post on Facebook or ask your actor friends, bartender friends, etc. There are also sites such as The Actors Fund and Perfect Strangers that you can list on. People are always looking for rooms in NYC, so you should be able to find someone if you're diligent.
Get Professional Movers To Pack You Up
Don't wait for your friend who owns a van to get some free time to come and help you out. You need to treat this as an emergency situation. Contact a moving company that can send over movers right away. They can load up your bed, dresser, chairs, and all your boxes into a truck and transport them for you to your next locale. They can also bring all the packing supplies, which will save you the time and bother of running around getting boxes, tape, and packing popcorn for your fragile items.
Arrange For Long Term Storage
You can ask the moving company to recommend a self storage place to use. Then rent the unit and have the movers load all of your stuff into the storage unit. If you're role is picked up, and you end up staying overseas for an extended period of time, you might want to get the movers to pick up your stuff and deliver it to a shipper who will send it overseas.
